Things to Do in Santa Cruz County This September
Summer may be coming to an end, but Santa Cruz County isn't slowing down just yet. September brings some of our favorite local traditions, from camping underneath the Giant Dipper to celebrating local art and wine in Capitola.
Before you trade your beach towel for a pumpkin-spice latte, here are four events to add to your calendar this September.
Boardwalk Fall Campout | September 11–12
Have you ever wanted to spend the night at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk?
The annual Fall Campout gives families the chance to camp overnight right on the Boardwalk. The event typically includes an evening of Boardwalk activities followed by a night spent sleeping beneath some of Santa Cruz's most recognizable attractions.
It's definitely not your average camping trip—and that's precisely what makes it such a uniquely Santa Cruz experience.
Capitola Art & Wine Festival | September 12–13
Spend the weekend sipping, strolling, and taking in the views at the Capitola Art & Wine Festival.
Each year, Capitola Village fills with artists, local wineries, food, live entertainment, and visitors enjoying one of the most picturesque settings in Santa Cruz County. With Capitola Beach only steps away, it's easy to make an entire day of it.
Local Tip: Don't count on finding parking right in the Village during the festival. Give yourself extra time and take advantage of event transportation or off-site parking options when available.
Boardwalk Oktoberfest | September 12
You don't have to wait until October to celebrate Oktoberfest.
The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk brings a little Bavarian-inspired fun to the coast with its September Oktoberfest celebration. It's an easy addition to a weekend downtown and gives you another excuse to visit the Boardwalk after the height of the summer season.
Santa Cruz County Fair | September 16–20
Finish out the month with one of Santa Cruz County's quintessential local traditions.
The Santa Cruz County Fair brings together rides, food, entertainment, livestock, agriculture, exhibits, and competitions at the county fairgrounds in Watsonville. It's one of those events where you can spend a few hours—or most of the day—wandering around and still find something you haven't seen yet.
And while the rides and fair food get plenty of attention, don't skip the exhibit halls and agricultural displays. They're part of what makes a county fair feel distinctly local.

September might mark the beginning of fall on the calendar, but around here, summer tends to stick around a little longer.
Whether you're camping at the Boardwalk, spending the weekend in Capitola, or making your annual trip to the county fair, there's still plenty of time to get out and enjoy Santa Cruz County before the season changes.
